Pain is weakness leaving the body

Pain is temporary. Pride is forever.

Nobody ever drowned in sweat.

~ Marine Corps Slogans

That second one is currently my favorite!

I've always been a fan of "When it absolutely, positively has to be destroyed overnight."

Although that's probably not so applicable to fitness goals, 'cept maybe crash dieting.

Hee hee... Yeah, that's one of my faves too! Only my mom would say it applies to me. I have a gift for creating chaos out of order!

Another good one the Marines have is

It's not arrogance. We really are that good.

@blest: I first saw "Pain is temporary. Pride is permanent." on the back of a fellow runner's t-shirt during a race sponsored by the New York Road Runners' Club.

Thanks for revealing its source!

Well... I don't know for sure that the Marines said it first. But I wouldn't argue with them about it!

Ya know, I think of this in terms of the permanent damage done to the body, in the quest of temporary fitness. Is this because of my age?

I know, because of prior injuries, that if I push too hard, I'm not going to recover. The 40% loss of the use of my hand is gone. If I try to push beyond its limits, I'm going to make the situation worse. So, when I see this slogan, I worry. In the long run, for me, I'm better off acting as the tortoise, instead of the hare!
