Does anyone know what the best bang for my buck would be if I wanted to purchase a Mountain Bike? I was wondering what brands are top quality but are relatively cheap to purchase. I am really interested in starting to bike for fitness but have no experience doing so.

I want to develop a solid hobby that is great for fun as well as my fitness. I was thinking of checking out a few stores soon but probably want to spend under $300. Thanks in advance.

I'm not an expert by anymeans, but have just recently gone through the same process you are. I was looking to buy 2 bikes... One for me and one for my wife. And like you, I was willing to spend about $300 each. As I shopped around, I realized that any new bike that was $300 or less, tended to be kind of crappy. I'm one of those people that does not like to be limited because of the equipment I'm using. I decided that there were no new bikes in my price range, that I was willing to ride. So I started looking at used bikes. I hit Craigslist, ebay, classified ads, and started asking friends. I was able to find 2 bikes (that needed minor work). I bought a Giant for myself for $50. Then, I bought a GT for my wife for $75. After taking them to the local bike shop, I was able to recondition the 2 bikes for about $200. So, for around $325, I got 2 really good quality bikes. Both have better than average components, are lightweight, and (after a little service) are in great condition. I could not have bought these bikes new for the price that I paid.

Just my experience... hope that helps.

I started looking at Craigslist last night. The problem is, is that I don't really know what brands are decent. I don't want to overpay for a used bike and don't really know bikes that well to make the call. I guess I am going to have to do some research.

But yea, I agree used might be the way to go. Especially because some people probably discount their costs a ton.

I remember when I was younger I had a Gary Fischer and I really like it. I think that is a pretty decent brand. I'm gonna see if any of those are online used.

Yeah, I would definitely do your own research. I'm happy with both the Giant and the GT that I ended up with. Other good brands include Trek, Motobecane, Cannondale. Like I said, I'm not an expert, so maybe go to a local bike shop and get some advice from them. I found that a lot of people buy these really expensive bikes, and then their vigor dies off... It's at that point that they might be willing to dump their bike for a good price. I might have gotten lucky, but I was able to get 2 bikes (from 2 different people) for a decent price, just by taking my time and putting out a little effort.
