It's my third session of doing my weights routine and it told me I needed to do 2 sets of 12-15 push-ups. I used to love these as a kid and could do 30 at around 13 or so. Last year I was also able to do them but I ended up breaking my hand at one stage and was unable to do them after that ever since. The broken hand was not related to the pushup itself,... er long story short I ended up hitting something on a brick wall and broke my pinky finger knuckle. Being in cast for a couple of months my wrist became extremly weak. But that happend 9 months ago. My wrist is strong again but for some reason I feel like I fail everytime I try to do a pushup. I was able to do 4 but then I had to stop because I felt like my right wrist was able to just give up.

Is there anything I can do to improve the strength in that wrist so I can do those pushups? As an alternative I had to do wall pushups but I think I prefer the ones on the floor.

Thanks for your help.

You should look into those "perfect pushup" gadgets that you can buy. They rotate with your wrists as you go up and down. They would probably ease the tension. I don't think they are that expensive either. Let me know if you can find the link, if not I will try to find it for you.

I think that I'm actually going to get some of those as well. I suppose that perfecting the motion would be nothing but beneficial.

Well, with all the fitness equipment around that I would like to buy, I don't think I can afford it right now. Thats why I found a book that can help me achieve my goals using the limited amount of equipment in the surroundings of my own home.

I have seen those perfect pushup things, but at the time I thought "why get that when you can do pushups without them?"

They do look good but I guess I can't spend the money on them at this point in time.

What about those pushups where you keep your knees on the floor? Obviously they are much easier than regular pushups, but that would relieve a lot of the stress on your wrists but still allow you to go through the motions and tone. At least until your wrists feel strong enough for the normal ones...

I have the Professional Pushup Pro (ripoff of Perfect Pushup) and if done right does help a lot. I went from 35 pushups to almost 60 now. I wasn't going to the gym while using it for 2 weeks, and I was able to bench more (185, easily 12 reps). I also went in my own direction with these, and used them to tone my triceps, and I can see them now!

I do pushups on my knuckles mostly, and I find that doing them flat handed puts a lot of strain on my wrists. Perhaps knuckle pushups whould be easier for you?

Thanks guys I might try the knuckled ones first, and then perhaps look into getting the perfect pushup set later on

Try using the 'Grease the Groove' method where you just do a lot of volume. Like lots of sets of one or two throughout the day just to get your body used to it, and gradually it will come.

When doing wall press-ups or press-ups on a table try doing them on your fingertips to make it more interesting and to develop the forearm and wrist strength. Or even do them one-handed against the wall?

Dean,

Thanks for the info, I didn't think of doing it gradually throughout the day. But I think I would definatly prefer the floor over the wall... probebly because I am use to it from doing it a few times when I was a teenager.

Thanks again.

A really good way to strengthen your wrists and arms in to lay down on the floor and toss a medicine ball over your chest. Just toss it enough for it to leave your hands. Do this with control. Use a 10 to 12 pound medicine ball.

Here is a site to eventually get to doing 100 push-ups, and here is a push-up workout made by an ex-navy seal.

Oh wow! 100 push ups! That's intense!! I may try that out some time after healing up from getting my nose drilled on.

So is it okay to do pushups with shoes off?

My problem is i am too top heavy(as in chest area) even when i was younger i always felt like there was a heavy anvil tied to my chest pulling me down.
i have a hard time doing the one with the knees on the ground too. my strength training DVD has push ups of 6-8, 3 times over and i am lucky if i can hit three without my arms and torso having enough.

Short of reduction surgery(which i can't afford) i don't know what to do and i have never seen those perfect push up things in this town with it's pathetic fitness equipment availability.

I've decided to do this, and even though on the evaluation thing I did 3 1/2 (yes the half counts), I managed to do 10 on the last set of day one. You do not know how happy I am. That's my LIFETIME BEST!

Anyway, I find knuckle push-ups to be extremely difficult and painful. This is just my opinion, but what if you got a stick and put a weight on it with a rope and did wrist roles to strengthen your wrists? We did those it gym for a bit and I felt the improvement.

Whatever you do, best of luck.

Take a look at "Push Up Pro adds a twist to your workout."

It's a review of a device that is similar to the perfect push-up device. Anyway, the people in the comments have used both (to good and bad benefits).
