Hey Folks -

I've had two BF scales. They always seem to jump around, especially on the body fat %ages.

Anyone have a recommendation for a non-flaky scale? I'm pretty sure I didn't lose 10% body fat in a day, though it would be nice ;)

I'm also open to other ways of measuring body fat, though I tend to think that calipers are often misused, especially in untrained hands.

TIA
- Allie

I've got this scale: http://www.amazon.com/Tanita-BF679W-Scale-Monitor- Water/dp/B0009V1YPK

which I did a bit of research on to get.

The issue with bioimpedance (which most scales use for bf%) is that it's very sensitive to water changes in your body. And you need to have your feet a little damp when you use it (it sends a small current through your legs).

But if you make sure to do it at the same time every day (and not after a super salty meal, or after you've sweat a lot) and make sure that your feet are a little damp mine has proved to be very consistent. (As to whether or not it's accurate is a different issue.)

huh. I could've sworn that my crappy Taylor BF scale said to NOT have your feet damp. Maybe I'll try that before throwing more money into the scale pot.

Thanks for your help, and I'll try that scale out if that doesn't help =)

The bad thing with scales is their not the greatest. Some times their 'close' and by close I mean within 3% Othertimes they are way off.

The best thing to do is a combination of measuring with a good tape and a decent pair of calipers.

Between those two you can track the changes/movements.

Getting a pro to do it works wonders but unless your gym does it for free or you have access to it, its not cheap.
