just curious, when working out if you have a harder time than you usually do trying to get your heart rate (and maintaining it) into your target heart rate zone does that mean:

-you werent properly warmed up?
-you werent properly rested?
-you arent working hard enough?

any or all of the above or other ideas?

All I have to do is get to the next hill to send my HR sky high no matter how well rested or warm I am so I'm gonna say it has to do with working hard enough. Find a nice hill and jog up it.

Good question!
I know a friend of a friend who worked for many hours on Sunday raking the yard and doing all of the spring cleaning stuff. Pretty hard stuff. Rumor has it this person also got a good sunburn out of the deal. Then the friend of a friend did some walking/jogging that night because it was nice out. This person took then took Monday off to rest the body. This morning he couldn't get the heartrate up to speed on the elliptical, doing the same speed and resistance as always, probably averaging 6-8 bpm less than normal.

I think it would be coz youa arent working hard enough or the exercise has become too easy for you. Over time the heart muscles get more efficient/ stronger and you have to work harder to get your HR higher. When i run, my HR always stays in the 160-170 range whereas on my elliptical i have to work really hard for to get to that rate.

When in doubt, push the envelope.

Ditto here, which is why I always mix up the elliptical session with upper body moves like: max-speed speed bag simulations, sped-up tai chi moves, as-if-skipping arm moves at the sides, and even exaggerated air drumming.

Max-tension arms on the handles for intervals is pretty challenging too.

I would say not working hard enough as well. Raise the resistance level and you should see a increase in the heart rate level as well.

what a coincidence derek!!did he/she think they werent working hard enough?

sher/rachael-i didnt think i wasnt working hard enough even though i put that as one of the options. the truth is this really has only happened to me 1 or 2xs and i felt i couldnt work harder. i couldnt go run up a hill or increase the tension because that would be too hard to do and i wasnt trying to make the exercise harder nor did i want it to be harder. it was the normal exercise that i did and i just noticed i had difficulty doing the regular routine and getting my heart rate into the zone i normally get it into.

I guess I read you wrong, Jenn.

Have you in fact been sleeping bad lately?

How's the water levels?

I've adjusted for better fitness over time. I'm going faster than ever to keep the heartrate up to where I think it needs to be (resistance is already maxed out). It was almost like suddenly a switch was turned on (or off) and I couldn't get my heartrate up near to what I was doing a couple days ago.

Its a measure of your fitness and the great progress you've made! It gets harder and harder to get your HR up because your body is more efficient at exercising. The only way to fix that - up the intensity

Good luck and congrats on the new level of fitness!

Minu, i remember reading about the boxing moves you wrote about once. When i used to do HIIT on the elliptical i would punch my hands up in the air and do all sorts of aerobics type movements with my hands....it certainly does shoot the HR up and maintains it!!

Try the speed bag sims, Derek, (arms up high, circles tight and done as fast as possible for as long as possible), they kick it for me no prob.

Jen, may I ask what the exercise in question is? And in what zone are you working at, (100-135 bpm, 140-170, etc?)

On the elliptical?
I'd fall off! Or worse, spill my beer!

im not sure that im making myself clear. i was absolutely working hard enough and was working the way i normally do. to add more intensity would make it too difficult for me to do. i was not being lazy. if i added more intenisty i would not be able to keep up with the activity.

minu-i dont know exactly what my heart rate was at the time( i was not in my zone-i was probably just below it), this happened awhile ago. i was doing the bike at the time, which i normally ride.

Exactly.
I tried to increase my speed, and still didn't get to my "operating level" of 150+ bpm. For how fast I was going on the machine, I thought something was going to break. Either me or the elliptical.

I don't mean that you are being lazy. Like somebody already said, when your body and heart get used to a specific exercise, it becomes more efficient. When I used to do the ellipticals a lot, I found that after a few months of doing ellipticals every day, I just was not getting a very good work out in any more. So I started doing 1 day of running then 2 days of running every week to keep me working hard and the lbs dropping. (I had a lot more success losing poundage that time than this one, but I don't think I was gaining as much muscle.)

I think I've experienced this too, Jenn, and I just chalk it up to one of those strange things that happen. There are different things that can affect heart rate. I figure some days things just line up in such a way that I am at my max effort, but my heart rate isn't.

Your heart rate doing an activity depends on a lot of things besides just the intensity of the activity. If you didn't get enough sleep or fluids, too much/little food, are stressed out, or any number of factors can affect your heart rate range each day.

From what I've read, your max heart rate will change day to day based on a number of factors. Some days you're just so tired that doing half the intensity you normally do will shoot your heart rate up, while other days are particularly good and you can't seem to get it up as high as "normal."

I have a polar F11 that calculates "own zones" based on a few simple steps. You can use preset ones each time, or have it calculate the new zone levels each time you exercise. They recommend recalculating it each time because of how easily your zones change day to day.

True Cindy. Days when i havent slept well or had a stressful day/ dont feel like working out, my HR doesnt reach that high. Since it happened to you only a few times, i think you can ignore it. The important thing is that you are working out consistently and it has brought you towards your goals

rachael-no, i didnt think you meant i was being lazy. i didnt know if i made myself clear that i couldnt increase the resistance to make it harder. i do try to mix things up. good reminder though, thanks.

cindy-that makes sense; could have just been a fluke.

neesha- i use a polar watch; maybe its time to recalculate my range.

thanks sher and everyone else for their contributions.
