Hi, I usually like to eat yogurt or cottage cheese and fruit after I work out.
I was wondering how soon after working out should I eat to recieve maximum protein benefits and calorie burning?

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

I believe you have about a 30-45 minute window where it is the absolute best time to eat. I have a protein shake within minutes of weight training, then cook a proper meal once I get home. Incorporate both protein and carbs for maximum efficiency.

I too usually ingest a macro-balanced infusion of about 3-400 cals worth about 15-30 minutes post workout.

I love to eat. Carbs is my weakness link that I always lose control in front of it.
I started running for fitness in 2007. Ever since I finished the 1st marathon (San Diego RnR 2007), I am addicted to running.
I started traineoing in Nov 2007. I have reached my goal weight in Jun 08 already. But, now, I don't care much about my weight. I care about it only if it affects my running performance.

My nutritionist told me to eat with 15min after working out. The post workout meal should contain 10-25g high index carbs and 15-25g protein. She recommends pineapple as the carbs source. It is high index and rich in enzymes to help absorb protein.
But, my running source said that larger amount of carbs should be consumed within 30min after a long run (>10 miles) to refill the glycogen lost. And, extra vitamin C and B to help rebuild the damaged cells.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they haev to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is NOTHING.
(I freakin LOVED that ad campaign)

It's important to get SOMETHING into your system pretty quickly; I like to get a protein shake on my way out of the gym, then eat a proper meal once I get home... I also keep some raw almonds in a ziplock bag in my car and I eat maybe a handful or two on the drive home since I live a good 20-30 minutes away from the gym.
My personal experience has shown me that my body really appreciates it more, and it shows me by burning more fat and retaining more muscle than when I would leave the gym "empty" and wait until I got home and cooked to eat, but I have a coworker who seems to be doing fine doing the exact opposite as me... just goes to show how we're all unique, special snowflakes.

I did not believe it before. I was just like your coworker in the past. After a long run, the only thing I want edto do the most was to take a shower, do fascial,...etc. I did not have the appetite to eat at all. By the time I ate, it was 2 or 3 hours later. I did a lot of running and yet my bf%/wt did not go down.
I have started following the nutritionist instruction to eat within 15 min after working out. I do feel more energtic thru the day. I have eaten a lot more compared to the past. But, I lose weight. Well, I have also lost muscles as well because I am not eating enough. I am still in transition period to get used to eat more protein.

same for me...I had seriously restricted my calories over the last few months and saw decent results, but thats not how I want to lose weight...I have realized (since starting to follow forums like this one) that its really not as much about the weight loss as getting in shape and gaining muscle while losing fat.
I'm trying to retrain myself to eat more and to increase my protein, but old habits are hard to break.

Exactly! It may sound strange to many. It is not easy to eat a lot of protein. I have been a carbs lover.
Burning fat is not too difficult. Cardio exercise will do good job.
But, gaining/retaining muscle is not easy. We need to incorporate right amount of wt training, good quality protein intake in the right time. I am still learning.
