My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

I'm a writer and a web developer. Neither is a very active occupation, so I'm trying now to make up for a lifetime of sedentary activity and overeating. I'm not tracking calories since I'm following the Weight Watchers Core Program, where calories are not tracked.

There are good points in the article, but some that are not so good. In particular I disagree with the 20% exercise-80% diet formula. At least for me it needs to be closer to 50-50. And the note about fad diets, I say whatever works for you. Like the man said "Just win baby!".

Mark, in general I agree with you that "whatever works for you" is good. Everyone's body is different and will react differently to a specific diet/exercise routine.
That being said, I don't believe in fad diets, because they are just that, a fad. While they may be effective in the short-term, they are very difficult to maintain long-term. And that's what we really need: healthy lifestyle changes that we can continue to maintain as long as we need to to remain healthy.
Several years ago, I lost 40 pounds in about 6 months on the Atkins diet, but there is no way I could have stayed on that diet for much longer. As soon as I stopped the diet, the weight came right back.
I am currently on my own diet/exercise plan, and have lost 10 pounds so far. My plan is much more flexible, and although the weight loss may not be as fast as with some of the fad diets, this is something I will actually be able to stick with for the long haul.

Brandon,
I have been on Atkins for 3 years in January. Dropped 80 lbs since Jan '04, and I have maintained +/- 15 lbs for the last 2 years. As far as I am concerened Atkins is not a diet at all, but a low-carb lifestyle of my choosing. So a fad diet to me, isn't the same as a fad diet to you. I'm guessing there are many varying opinions on this.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Obviously, I've got a long way to go. As a father, I feel I just have to be in better health for the sake of my son.

Yeah, I got to say that so far my weight loss has been about 90% exercise and 10% diet. It really depends on who you are. I used to live a fairly sedentary lifestyle, but I think I was already eating pretty healthily. It's just that my portions were too big for my metabolic rate. Since I've added an hour of biking to my daily routine, I'm actually feeling hungry and eating more, but the pounds are still dropping off at about 1-2 pounds a week.
For me, it's way easier to get the exercise each day than to cut down on the portions. I don't entirely understand why, but it's working, so who cares, right?
