It's 9:55 in the morning and I just got done eating a big bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats or whatever it's called. The facts on the back seem pretty healthy. Not much sugar and low in calories. I plan on eating a small snack around 1pm.

It's not bad, and it's tasty!

Or what. Is there a negative effect to a 2 day hold on physical activity?

I think a 2 day hold on physical activity would be good, gives your muscles and body a time to relax and repair itself.

Right now I am eating a bowl of Gumbo which includes sausage, chicken, rice, and chunks of tomatoes. I am also drinking water with it =) The Gumbo is about 280 calories. And has 21g of Carbohydrates. Good or bad? I plan on eating again around Super Bowl time. Maybe some Chili? What do you guys suggest? I don't really have much fruit around here or vegetables. I have some apple sauce.

"I plan on playing basketball Monday, Wed, Fri and Weightlifting Tues and Thursday, is that cool? Would it be okay if I used weekends as a free time? Or what. Is there a negative effect to a 2 day hold on physical activity?"

It's not bad to have a day or two to yourself... but remember, you don't have to be "physically active" such as playing basketball every day to lose weight and the time you spend being active doesn't have to be a long time. If you're going to chill in front of the tv Sat. afternoon try dropping to the floor and doing a few situps/crunches or push ups... do it for 10 or 15 minutes or like my friend did when she started out, every time a commercial came on she did crunches until she was too tired to do anymore. It wasn't long before she could do crunches through the whole commercial time and then some... so she changed up her routine a bit. She's going to be 46 this year and this woman has an awsome body.

The bottom line is that you don't have to devote your whole life to rigorous activity... even a little bit helps. And changing up your routine now then will help you avoid or get over that dreaded plateau.

Why would free time not include physical activity? Don't you feel better when you move around, get the blood flowing, get some oxygen to your brain?

RE: Richard and Tim's discussion.
Drink all the water you can when you're thirsty, and you don't have room for sodas, milk, beer, etc.
If you make sure to eat five servings of fruit and three to five of vegetables per day, it is difficult to have much stomach room for a ton of bad stuff. Then eat some nice lean meats, and good balanced pastas and breads, some yogurt. It's difficult to binge on a steak and bag of salt and vinegar chips when you've made sure to fill yourself on good foods.

The best way to lose weight (I'm at 160 and in 2004 I was 235) is to encourage the positives, not discourage the negatives. Too much stuff in America is "unhealthy" or "must be avoided." That's true, but noone really knows what to do instead.

Go buy some granny smiths and melons and blueberries. Broccoli is really good, so is spinach. Avocado has all these healthy things going on for it but don't eat a ton of it or peanuts because of all the fat.

Most of all, focus on how you feel and your body composition, not your weight. You might be putting off fat and putting on muscle since you're exercising.

Good advice Troy.

What kind of training did you do when you were in the midst of your weight loss?

First thing I did was replaced all beverages with water.

I quit smoking and starting getting huge appetites (pretty common) so went all fresh fruits and vegetables for a week, so my binging would at least be healthy foods.

Then I got in the habit of eating that many fruits and vegetables every day.

But it took several years for me to lose all the weight, and unfortunately I lost a lot of muscle mass too. For a while I looked like a person who's been in traction, even...

Oh, and a set of dumbbells, two five pound weights each side (ten pounds plus a light bar) and training from a site that's something like sports-fitness-advisor.com (I started memorizing the workouts so it wasn't necessary for me to visit the site).

In summer of 2007 I started bike riding, and that's when I went down from 190-170 really fast, including a lot of muscle. I didn't know how to diet properly to avoid that.
