From age 6 til 9 I played soccer for my local school... I was really fit until my mom decided to move to a different location... This threw my life off balance and I have never played soccer since because there was no existing soccer team in the school I went to at that time... So I kinda sat around and did nothing and was sort of depressed for a few months I guess and then I got out of shape. I was really embarrased and had a low self-a-steem (is that how you spell it?) and I was kinda hesitant about re-embersing myself into the sports world again since I was overweight. So I got picked on alot in school and it changed my life forever as I was afraid to join sports teams since I was unpopular and picked on alot... So from there on, I gained more and more weight... But now I realize, I need to start losing it, so I am using Traineo to help motivate me and log my statistics so I can become a sexy little papa if you know what I mean. That is all.

How many calories do you need to burn to lose 1 full pound?
Just wondering because I have been working out on stationary bikes and treadmills and various other machines that count how many calories you burn.
I read 3500 somewhere but I am not sure about that number... if so thats intimidating...

With a family history of obesity, staying fit and losing weight for me are more than nice-to-haves: They're essentials.

That's about right--3,500. Easier to put it on quickly than to take it off quickly.

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

I just got back from Las Vegas where I went to the Bodies Exhibit (which was amazing, I highly recomend it!), and it said 3500 calories there also.
This works both ways: you have to burn 3500 calories more than you consume to lose a pound, and you have to consume 3500 more calories than you burn to gain a pound.

I decided enough was enough at 126kg (278lbs) and joined traineo soon after when I reached 122kg. I was going okay for a few weeks but I had trouble finding the time to exercise. I'm re-motivated again and my goal is to loose 50kgs (110lbs) whilst signifcantly improving exercise levels, diet and my fitness. I'm a Software Engineer.
[Edit: since posting my original profile I ballooned to 129.5kgs but I'm now back on track]

I went and saw that with my wife when it was downunder earlier this year and also recommend it.

9 calories per gram of fat
454 grams is a lb
454 * 9 = 4086 calories
that is assuming all of the 'calories' burnt are fat calories.

Mathematics graduate, looking for direction in life... I think I've got it now.
I love cycling and am pretty good. However, with a heavy heart, I've had to swallow my pride and accept that I'm just too old to realise my aspirations of the professional ranks. My backup plan is to become a cioccolatere (in Italia)... So I'll be keeping my cycling-up, to avoid the consequences of a sweet-tooth! After all, I still have it in me to get into the upper echelons of the amateur ranks.

Which is extremely unlikely, even in the most controlled situations. At least I would have thought -- fat calories are burnt when you do aerobic exercise; however, even at a low VO2max levels (say 25% -- about the normal walking level), you'll still be burning some carbs and maybe even a tiny amount of protein.
However, I've heard the 3,500kcal = 1lb fat thing so often and it's regularly quoted and even referenced in books that I would take it as a pretty good rule of thumb.
With regards to it being intimidating, look at it like this... 3500kcal over a week is 500kcal deficit per day. In other words, to lose 1lb of fat per week, you've got to consume 500 less calories than you expend every day (of course, this doesn't work if all you consume is butter and cake -- but you see what I'm getting at!). That shouldn't be a problem and 1lb/week is an ideal weight-loss rate.
