It upsets me that just when I start to get on a kick for working out, I get sick. It is a complete stop of all engines. What can I do while I am sick? Nothing, I just sit around. Not to mention the fact that eating pretty much goes down the drain when I stay home from work. Should I just bide my time? What can I do?

I just found out about this great website and have signed up to put more focus on my weight loss.
I have been waaaaay overweight for a long time but especially after being pregnant with my son and then only losing half of the 65 pound weight gain. I have lost 6 pounds over the last year and now I am 26 pounds over what my weight was pre-pregnancy and my son is turning 3years old in October - IT IS TIME TO GET MOTIVATED AND I AM GETTING READY!!!
My goal of weight loss will be in 10 pound increments and I hope to acheive a 30 pound weight loss in 24months (2 years!!) and hope I have set a realistic goal for myself. I can do this!!!
My next step is to purchase a treadmill and start my goals of walking to help in my weight loss.
I also plan to give up soda, including my favorite Diet Pepsi (this will be hard but I know soda isn't good for me).
I will start with more exercise and eventually change the diet habits along the way. I hope to make new healthy habits with food and exercise.
Wish me luck - I need it along with your encouragement and motivation!!
Thanks, Heather

Hi,
I am also getting over a massive headcold/sinus/ear/sorethroat thing and I'm not going to beat myself over not exercising like I wished I could do...I do continue to exercise, but not as long and not as often when I am sick. I'm a huge fan of chicken noodle soup while ill and this always seems to make a difference in my well-being.
Good luck to all of you. May we all get over our sicknesses quick and be back at it in no time at all!!

With a family history of obesity, staying fit and losing weight for me are more than nice-to-haves: They're essentials.

I've always found that I lose weight when I'm really sick--my body is working overtime to fight infection, and I'm less inclined to overeat because I feel lousy. When I'm sick at home but not laid up, I do what Chris does: Walk a bit to get some fresh air. Even those slow burn calories add up.

Same for me. I don't workout, but stay in bed and usually don't have an appetite. I do good to get down a can of soup.

I've always heard that if it is just in your head, like a runny nose or a sore throat. It was okay to exercise. But if it is in your chest or you have body aches you should take it easy. You also might try cutting your calories to make up for missed workouts

I am a contractor for a monolithic IT firm. This translates into a lot of time spent sitting. I have always been a big guy, but I am tired of being obese so I am going to utilize the power of community to hold my feet to the fire to stay active.

If your wicked sick eat simple nutritious foods. Chicken noodle soup is the prime example of this. Also sleep as much as you, your body is run down and needs to repair itself. If your just feeling under the weather, go for a walk and sleep more than you normally would.
Being sick while can be caused many things, it is in the end your body trying to cope with something outside of the status quo. The faster your body heals the faster you can get back into the gym.

Maybe you should consider taking a vitamin c supplement to help boost your immunce system. I take one and it seems to help.

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

I'm going through the sickness right now (head cold, stuffy nose). I'm trying to just get some rest and kick this cold as quick as possible so I can get back to my excercise routine.

Aaron, if I were in that situation, I would still stay on a healthy routine. Perhaps I would reduce my intensity somewhat... or only take a couple of days off but I would not go back to being non-active.
Persevere. the end results willbe worhth it.
