My caveat:
There's no microwave in my office so anything I make has to be able to stay cold.

What I've been doing is making a big pot of some thing that is both delicious hot and leftovers are good cold. Sandwiches, noodles, salads, etc.

Ideas?

I mostly bring the following or have it handy:

- Fruit (2-3 pieces on a daily basis)
- Weight Control Instant Oatmeal (need hot water from coffee machine)
- Trail Mix
- Almonds or other nuts
- Yogurt
- Salad
- Chicken for my salald
- Salad dressing
- Protein Powder for Shakes
- Protein Bar

4 out of the 5 days I eat salads with some type of meat. Most of the time it is chicken.

Hope this helps a bit.

very interesting ...but people always told me that nuts (almond etc) were extremely unhealthy as a snack, there was something about the fat proportion in the nut or something else. And because of that i stay away of those treats even if it would make a tasty snack from time to time.

@Sebastian
I have always heard that certain types of nuts are a good snack because although they have a high density of fat, most of it is monounsaturated. Nuts also provide a good deal of other nutrients that are good for us including fiber and Vitamin E. Also, surprisingly, many nuts (almonds for example) are a good source of protein.

But, as with everything...moderation is key. One ounce of nuts is considered a serving...so the problem most people have is eating too many. They are however, a VERY satisfying snack in the middle of the day, and I keep a container of almonds in my desk at work.

There are lots of resources on the web to read up on this, but I have provided a link below for you:

Nuts are good for you!

@Fred
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will plan to use some of those myself!

You should especially get the raw nuts...ones that aren't roasted or salted...those are the best. I usually eat Blue Diamond raw almonds.

my typical day is breakfast in the car, lunch at school and dinner at work. i work in a coffee shop w/o a microwave (for now). whatever i take with me in the morning has to be okay not refrigerated all day and to be eaten cold or room temperarature.

What has saved my life is instant oatmeal - i add hot water from the espresso machine and let it sit for a few minutes. fruit, salad, yogurt, cereal, sandwiches are all things i tend to pack as well....and i try to leave a couple of cartons of yogurt in the work fridge so i don't have to worry about possibly poisoning myself with unrefrigerated yogurt!

if you are allowed to have/use a hotpot, that would open up a world of options, really! you could heat soups or make pasta even!

you guys are all nuts!
If you eat nuts you must count out the correct serving size if not you might go bonkers!

Salads can get boring, so I just throw everything together in them. I cut an apple, grapes, don't go crazy a small amount of raisins and either tuna, chicken or turkey breast. They have this great invention with spray salad dressing and it has very little calories. If I am sick of salad I mix light yogurt with cereal. I also like to eat those 100 calorie snacks and they are only 2 WW points, most the time. We have a hotpot and make oatmeal in it every morning. It really fills you up! Don't forget to bring at least 2 pieces of fruit with you. Good luck on your lunch adventures

I agree -- most of us eat way too much salt, so unsalted nuts are better. They're a great source of protein as well, if you're looking to switch some or all your meals to veggie.

I'm reading through McDougall's diet book, and he advocates cutting out as much fat as you can -- that includes nuts and high-fat / high-caloric density veggies and fruit like avocado. Other veggie diets like Fuhrman or Ornish aren't as radical and allow you nuts.

Cold Foods for Brown-Bagging: (that aren't mentioned above)
Onigiri
Hiyashi Chuuka
Any kind of makizushi, though if you don't have a bamboo sushi mat, you can always do Temaki
Hijiki

I like onigiri best. You can buy different kinds of furikake to mix in with the rice, and a little umeboshi is really nice.

if you like sandwiches.....you can get ideas on different kinds at whole foods...where i shop on occasion....they are more expensive than other places but you have sandwiches there that you can't find anywhere else....you can make them on your own if you like them....just an idea

Great ideas! Mine are -

cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit or fruit preserves (w/o added sugar)

like Fred and Dani, I like oatmeal. I usually add raisins and walnuts

An apple or a banana

Boiled egg

Any kind of breakfast burrito - w/ scrambled eggs, goat cheese and sauteed vegetables; or scrambled tofu and salsa; or hummus and vegetables. You can do the same with pita bread

I try not to bring stuff to snack on, because I get really compulsive - i.e. if it's there, I'm eating it until its gone. Jenny- If I had a container of almonds, they would be gone over the course of one day!

So I eat every 3 hours or so - usually oatmeal as a filler around a main lunch.

I've also read that roasted nuts aren't as good for us as raw nuts because the roasting alters the fat content into some form that's not too good for us.

do you have a toaster oven? whole wheat toast and peanut butter is the best snack and full of fiber + protein.

you can also make a protein shake before work and sip on it in the morning, which will keep you full until lunch, so you only have to bring a snack for the afternoon.

Hi, I am fairly new to this forum and am enjoying all the support for weight loss and healthy living that is on here. I love wraps, I use those great tortillas that are low cal and low carb. They come in vegetable or wheat flavor (can't remember the brand). The low cal come in pesto, jalapeno, sundried tomatoes, and more. I put low fat cream cheese or whipped cream cheese in a thin layer then add ham or turkey and sliced red peppers and roll them up, wrap them in saran wrap and have a great lunch at work. On days I up my calories I may have turkey, cranberry sauce, blue cheese, and walnuts. Or chicken mixed with a little lf or fat free mayo, apples, grapes, or raisens, topped with blue cheese and walnuts. Combinations are endless and they pack well for lunches. Rexanne

Was that a small Red Dwarf reference? Or did I just confuse you?

A good alternative to nuts is baked chickpeas/garbanzo beans. Use the bagged dry beans. Soak the chickpeas first, drain the water, then spread out on a baking sheet. Bake at about 400 til they are firm. You can add different spices to replace the salt.

Plain rice cakes with reduced-fat peanut butter are a great snack, and they just require a little storage and preparation space. Hummus and pita can be kept in the fridge and don't require heating.

Also, if you like tofu and can eat it cold with sauce, I would highly recommend keeping Pete's Tofu to Go around. Keep in the fridge, and all you need is a sharp knife to open and a sink or garbage can in which to drain the tofu, then slice it up and mix it with the sauce. Soooo good. A half a pack with a piece of fruit is enough for a meal.

Today i had plain jogurt for breakfast, oatmeal for lunch and a banana for coffeebreak. I also like apples and oranges but i am starting to think that kiwi might have coused to stomach pains i have been suffering from the last days. I also missed out of workout caused by rain this morning, it sucks!
There are plenty of veggies and fruit that i can take easily with me to my workplace, jogurt does not get bad right away even if it is not cooled. I also often have carrots and cottage cheese, it is my favorite lunch these days.

One of my favorite on-the-go items - and my go-to item when traveling - is a turkey roll-up. You make or purchase black bean dip (I love the recipe in Pam Smith's Good Life cookbook). If purchasing, check fat and sugar content, of course. Then take a whole wheat tortilla, spread on some black bean dip, and layer on two or three slices of sliced turkey breast. Thin sliced veggies add fun flavor and crunch. I like red and yellow peppers on mine! If you're really feeling decadent, add a little fat free sour cream. Then ROLL it up! A tasty change from the usual sandwich...

I use a Mr. Bento Lunch Box. It maintains the temperature of it's contents for quite a while. I microwave soup almost every morning and put it, among other things, in my Mr. Bento and it's still hot when I eat it several hours later.

I've included some links below if anyone is interested.
