I am a chip oholic. Any chip, Dorito, crunch, will set me off on a binge. My trainer recently introduced me to his weaknesses and when we shared, he recommended Quaker Rice snacks/cakes. They're in many flavors and satisfy my craving. I purchased cheddar and chocolate (no not together) and am having a blast. The sodium and carbs are not bad. Definitely better than ruffles any day of the week. Thought I'd share the idea.
Has anybody tried red bull, rip it or any other energy drink. I'm having a little issue with energy/desire to get in the gym. If I do go, I'm in a fog and not into it. Any ideas? I don't think that I'm over trained because nothing hurts and my diet/sleep are all in check. Some personal issues that may be fueling my downward spiral, but other than that, I'm thinking of trying a boost. Any feedback?

yeah, I'm a cruchy salty carbo sort of snacker myself. Rice cakes are definitely low in calories but they're basically like eating pure sugar. They're nothing healthy in them and they break down quickly making them a high glycemic carb, basically a junk carb.
Have you every experimented with carbs and/or high glycemic foods? Some people are very affected by them which may be causing your lack of energy. High glycemic foods spike the blood sugar levels and can leave you feeling lethargic. High glycemic foods are best consumed after an intense exercise workout to replenish bloog sugar levels quickly. If you eat them before exercising, they can sap your energy.
I usually snack on Kashi cereals for the crunchy cravings, they're full of fiber and protein. Rice cakes are good in that they have little calories but you might want to limit them to an after workout snack.

I've never tried any of those energy drinks...
Rice cakes sure, but I'd rather have a crisp bread hi in fiber, like a Wasa for eg. I find that rice cakes make for good dog treats when training the lil guy though.
And I'm looking forward to the next time I'm across the Pond, so I can try, (among other things that are hard to get here), this Kashi cereal I keep reading about.
Dan, there is no drink or food that can get your mind and spirit where they should be to make the very best of your body. It's a matter of focus and zen. Hangin' out with fit and healthy people tends to rub off too, so perhaps make a 'play date' with the more driven friends in your circle?

Looking to add some muscle over the next few months. Trying to get in those calories and focusing on the compound lifts. We'll see how it all goes :)

Rice cakes & PB = a good treat for me =) Almosts masks the taste of the rice cake.
That said, having a good workout is always about being mentally tuff/prepared. I'm tired many times physically or even mentally, but when I get to the Gym I know why i'm there, the goals I have, and I put it all into it.
The craziest feeling is how great I feel after 95% of my workouts where I was 'ehhh' before.
Also having the freinds/buddy at the gym will help tremendously. The nights I work solo vs the nights I work with a partner can't really compare. Having that person saying, one more, one more, and helping finish it out, gets alot more results then myself solo.

I hope to have a bikini body for this summer.
I was more fit when I was back in college. (which was 2 years ago)
I'm stuck in this cycle of the YO YO diet. I'll work out and eat right for six months then it all goes down hill for the rest of the year.
So one day I googled a fitness support group and came upon traineo. I'm glad I did!

I've tried sugar free red bull and no carbs monsters but they seem to wire me up too much. I think these energy drink are loaded with way too much caffine.
Try a low calorie protien shake befor a workout. That seems to help me!
Thanks for the snack tip! I'm going to grab some at the supermarket tonight=)

Oh goodness, those quaker cakes are great and evil, especially the chocolate ones, I ate 10 servings in one afternoon a couple days ago No more rice cakes for me for awhile... my lack of self-control is really appalling.

Success is not a race, be patient. Success leads to success. Success is always a work in progress. Success doesn't come to you--you go to it. Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process. Some people dream about success... while others wake up and work hard at it. Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying. Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED! If at first you don't succeed-try, try again

Yep I am a crunchy salty carb lover too lol...chips used to always be my downfall...still are - if they are there in front of me OMG it is such a temptation..my hubby loves them too, and I hate when he buys them and leaves them lying around I KNOW THEY ARE IN THE HOUSE which almost sends me into a frenzy haha...so I say to him, eat them when I am not around or else buy me my subsitute..rice cakes or rice crackers..yes the flavoured ones BUT they have a fraction of the saturated/trans fats that regular chips have and I don't feel as if I am missing out on anything!

Rice cakes have one of the highest glycemic indexes ever recorded. It's WORSE than pure sugar. I wouldn't touch that stuff with a 10 foot pole. It definitely shouldn't be a primary, secondary, or even tertiary source of carbohydrates.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

I don't snack on carbs too much. Period. Good GI or Bad GI, it just doesn't work for me personally, so no bread for me.
I generally grab some cold meats, seafood and dairy stuff. Some people find that bad news, but it works for me.

I've never cared much for rice cakes...I find 8.5x11 letterhead just as palatable...
When I'm craving a salty snack, I eat some BAKED Cheetos. There are close to tasting like the real thing. They may not be the healthiest snack out there, but it is better than eating potato chips, pork skins, or some other junk!

If you buy some rice cakes and you don't like the taste, they make great coasters.
