Hi

I am following the BFFM nutrition plan and am trying the egg white omelletes but find them totally tasteless, even when seasoning with slat/pepper. Anyone got any tips on how to improve the taste or what do you do with yours?

Hi, Xyba,

Try throwing in a little feta, or light-cream cheese--add some spices and if you're not doing this already, make it veggie-rich: fresh garlic, onions, red or green peppers, a few diced cherry tomatoes, etc.

And remember that one large egg is only about 80 cals, so using one whole egg and two egg whites can make all the difference.

A healthy-hearted person can eat a half dozen eggs a week, so don't be too shy of them, so long as you have no cardiac issues.

You might also try some of the commercial egg white products, ie., Egg Beaters and others, they come in great flavors, ham and cheese, cheese, southwest, etc. Convenient--no separation, or figuring out what to do with the yolks--and tasty. Three tblsp equal 1 egg and only 40 calories. I love them. A good way to get a high protein meal because you can have a three or four egg white omelet easily. Good luck!

i love egg white omlettes! sometimes when i want to make them tastier, i mix in one whole egg with the white, and then i'll put smoked turkey (lunch meat) in it for some taste. it's pretty damn good.

I made eggs last night and they were awesome. I used: green pepper, onion, carrots, broccoli, chives, turkey bacon, salt & pepper, and tons of hot sauce (I use Franks Red Hot because it's the best hot sauce, ever. Although any kind will work.)

Fred took my suggestion. Fresh cut salsa on eggs is the best! You can make a great salsa or buy some from the store. Costco has a great Pico de Gallo. I like mine spicy, so sometimes I'll make it myself. It's all in the fresh jalapenos and the lemon.

Also, here's a nice egg white omelete recipe from Billy Beck's website:

Thanks for all your ideas guys. I live in the UK, so some of the products you mention aren't available here, (I don't think we can get cartons of egg whites even), but certainly the ideas with fresh produce are do-able.

I need to put some imagination to it really. Thanks again for your help.

In addition to the sauteed garlic or onions, red bell pepper, suggested above, etc etc if you want a salt free seasoning, Mrs. Dash makes just such a thing. You'd never guess it has no salt. If sodium is no object, Chef Paul's (Prudhomme's) magic seasoning can come in handy.

Now you have a whole slew of different ways to enjoy those egg whites.

Dang, you made a convert out of me.

Spice it up! Green Chilies. You can get the small can of them and keep them in the fridge for a week or so.

I like to cover mine with hot sauce, the sauce I have has 0 calories. Plus it helps me make sure that I get down my days water. (I know milk and cheese or bread is better for after eating hot sauce, but I try to avoid unplanned food)

I eat eggs every day, generally 3 whites and one whole at breakfast (sometimes 2 and 2), and I keep frozen, chopped onions and peppers on hand, always have fresh baby spinache and salsa - all of these will usually end up in my eggs! Whenever I have other veggies, they end up there too... if I want some extra calories/protein in the AM I will also throw some cottage cheese on the finished product - it's tasty and nutritionally awesome. Also really healthy and even tastier is a farmer's cheese made from skim milk - like a creamy chevre. If I have eggs at night, they'll usually end up w/ chicken or turkey in them as well as salsa, or sometimes shrimp if I have it on hand... omelettes are like one dish casseroles - be creative!

I don't really eat potato products much, but they are delic in an omelette as well.

oh yeah, fresh herbs! if I have some on hand I will make a really simple omelette, more french style (light and fluffy) using herbs, fresh ground black/white pepper and maybe some garlic (the grocery i go to has garlic paste in a tube and it is amazingly convenient).

i second (or third?) the salsa! just make your egg whites as you usually would and spoon on the salsa after its already cooked. its really good! and salsa is basically veggies anyway. plus you can get salsas now that have all different kinds of flavors like garlic and onion (mmmm).
