I'm 26 years old, I have a wonderful wife and a beautiful daughter.
I graduated from US Air Force basic training and am now at tech school. I will be doing PT 3 times a week and working out in the gym 3 days as well.
My goal is to maintain my weight while burning more fat and gaining strength.

so, i've read that getting not enough calories is bad (obviously) and can put your body into survival mode and you won't loose any weight or gain any muscle. so my question is, how low is too low?
thanks!

I started out exercising and dieting in order to qualify for a laparoscopic lap band surgery.
After a few months, I found that I actually felt better, and had more energy, so I decided to scrap the surgery.
I started doing so well in fact, that I inspired my husband, aunt and uncle, and cousin to go to the gym.
In 1.5 years, I'm down 120 lbs, and no surgery! If I can do it, anyone can.

I'd say anything below 1200 calories per day is bad news. Especially for a man. I tried alternating 600 cal days with 1600 calories days, and barely made it a week. I was just too tired, hungry, and grouchy to function.

take a look at Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook, specifically chapter 14 "Lose the Weight, Keep the Energy".
She gives an example that has someone cutting 20% of their daily calories, and no more, in order to safely lose weight over time while exercising.
Today I need 3000 calories just to maintain (according to other formulas in her book), so I should only drop to 2400 calories to safely reduce my weight and maintain my energy level so I can keep on exercising.
For the record, I am 203 lbs, will run for 45 minutes (as soon as I finish posting this) and will have been moderately active today.

I need no warrant for being, and no word of sanction upon my being. I am the warrant and the sanction.

I'd hesitate to hack off any more than 10-15% of your daily value. Eat smarter, don't just cut calories.

I'm just trying to tone my body and maintain my weight (and be healthy).

When I was heavier I needed 1300 to avoid feeling yucky, but now I can survive on 1200 or so.
1500ish is a good target, though.

About me: --------------------------- I'm an architecture student at a great school.
After trial and error, managed to shed the pounds for real.
What I'm doing: --------------------------- Portion control still a problem. HIIT 2x/week Starting weights 1x/week
I take stairs over escalator and elevator ALL THE TIME (I climb 6 sets of stairs minimum for the day at the metro 2-3floors?).
Extra note: --------------------------- I finally understand what being fit means! And I actually love running now thanks to HIIT.
Goal: lose the belly fat! My problem area. First goal: 120lbs - MET 2nd goal: 116lbs - MET 3rd goal: 112lbs ish with more muscle definition
Realizing I can't change the way my body stores fat and have a noticeable belly during the day (pic was morning with light breakfast after workout) I will work on making a stronger core to counter the pooch a bit
Dropped 1 pant size since last year (stable weight) Dropped 2 pant sizes since mid-Summer after Greece (pastries=weight gain)

I'm now alternating from 1200 to 2000 day to day, doing only 3 low cal days and doing HIIT on 3 of the higher cal days.
I think it's working out well for me, best of all, the body can't really "settle" so I'll probably lose the rest of what I want to lose real fast.
