Heh, I started a personal trend that I really seem to like. Next door to my gym is a fantastic sushi bar and after weight training the last couple nights, I been stopping by for 3 tuna rolls and a pint of sapporo. Given that immediately after resistance training, Body for Life and hussmanfitness.org recommends to eat high glycemic carbs (to boost blood sugar) and protein (to repair damaged muscles) it seems like a good fit. Plus the fat content on ahi tuna is nearly zero according to calorie king.
Of course I'm still tracking all the calories and trying to hit my daily calorie deficit, but if any time is a good time for high glycemic carbs (rice and beer) and protein, it seems like it would be right after a heavy lifting workout.

That's funny, because I recently discovered that sushi seems to make an excellent, post-lifting meal myself. Didn't try it with the Sapporo though, I was pretty close to my max calories for the day already with the plain tuna rolls and the salmon sashimi I ordered. I just know I felt great afterwards, totally refuled and ready to finish my evening, and not feeling over-full either.

Must get back down to me fightin' weight, darned stoopid holidays and their tasty treats...
Fer reel: A couple years ago I dropped from 200 to 120, and since I've been "maintaining" ... which has turned into a slight, slow gain. School leaves me with an excuse to not work out, and that has lead to my weight creeping up. After 20 pounds I fought hard to get off the first time I'm saying no more and working my fat bum back down into the 120s where it belongs.
I prefer lifting heavy but I've learned to not hate "cardio" and have even taken up running... sorta.
Of course, my fave pastimes are usually sedentary, my art, gaming, etc... But I can get over that.

If by "beer" you mean an alcoholic beverage, it'd be far better to skip it.

Yeah, the beer is probably overkill but I just can't enjoy sushi without some sapporo.
Beer is just high glycemic carbs though right? Along with the small amount of alcohol.

I suppose the booze does dehydrate you, so it's not the best choice of carbs ever. Plus, processing the booze will suck up vitamins your body could have used for other things. I totally understand not wanting sushi without the Sapporo, though. It always takes me right back to Japan, which I miss horribly.

If you want to get serious about lifting you should know that cutting all beer out of your diet is the best thing to do, while you are still able to get some results if you drink lightly, beer has been proven to dehydrate you and believe it or not it will actually lower your testosterone levels and increase your estrogen levels!!! and that is the opposite of what you are going for, plus beer is what is called "empty" carbs. this means that there's no positive thing about it. The sushi however sounds like a really good idea, good source of protein with low fat. Good idea overall just be careful to make sure the carbs that you take in will do u good.

heyy if you work hard then enjoy your one Sapporo!! As long as you dont do complete over kill and have a 6 pack drinking your 1 beer and staying within your calorie range is just fine if it makes you happy. You always have to do what makes you happy!!

Hey Ben. Thanks for the advice. The dehydration thing sucks, but I drink coffee too and that has the same effect. I'm sure I can make it up by drinking some extra water. Plus doesn't beer have a lot of water in it? So it can't be that much of a net loss .
The testosterone and estrogen thing is concerning. I'll have to research that a bit. I'd be surprised if it really causes that much of a difference but I won't rule out the possibility.

Hello, my name is Barbara...I am always struggling to keep my weight constant...I've always been slim, lean and tight...however, when I had my first child...my weight skyrocketed to about 180...where I was formally about 125 or 130...about a size 10 or 11....and I would see pictures of myself get disgusted and lose the weight ...on silly diets....that only allowed me to achieve temporary weight loss...then, when I would become pregnant again...my weight would go up...I have three children....the second child is four years apart and the 3rd child is 5 years apart ..so, I struggled through out with seesaw weight changes....I think I have finally found the secret to staying at a constant weight...however, I do fall off the wagon now and then...and I joined this traineo site to stay on course....obviously...I don't intend to have any more children...so now, I can concentrate on just me...where as before...I was more in tuned to the babies needs....In addition, I breast feed them all so...I couldn't really get serious with weight loss.....I'm happy now...but, I'm always looking for ways to stay motivated...as it is so easy to fall off course.....I'm very happy that I found Traineo....I'm sure, It will be a great place to network with others...who can relate to my story.......love, Barbara

Hi all...just thought I would weigh in on this topic...excuse the pun...I think that sometimes we all get so uptight about the foods and drinks that we consume and forget that....moderation is the key...timing is everything and that whole foods and healthy beverages are what you need...so basically you can eat just about anything in moderation...just make sure that it's not filled with empty calories and that you eat nutrient dense foods...and don't forget that fresh clean water is the best beverage for your body....perfect because, there are no calories and water keeps you hydrated and flushes all the toxins out.....our bodies will always work with us...as long as we treat our bodies like our most precious gift......

What's with all the teetotalers here? Enjoy the beer dude, there is nothing wrong with relaxing after lifting your iron. One beer is not going to reduce your testosterone levels to the point where you are going to flit from the gym to go to your local Curves.

I am a rugger/web developer and, as it turns out, weighing 260 as a web developer doesn't gain me as much as it does in the scrum... ;] I'm looking to get down to a solid 210 lbs now. So far, Traineo has helped me to remain accountable to myself and I love it!

As part of my effort to get fit, I thought it would be nice to try to offer my exercise up to a good cause. I've decided to join the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride in June and will be riding the 50 MILE COURSE!
I would very much appreciate any donations you could make to help me in the fight against cancer. Thank you!

My name is Stephanie, I'm 27 yo. Some people call me Steph... or Donna (hehe). I am a gamer grrl, I love playing my Nintendo Wii, Xbox360, or going to LAN's to play Counter Strike. I love high performance vehicles, mostly imports (awd rally cars FTW!). I'm an IT monkey by day, and a goofball by night. I think that's all I can think of to post about myself right now... if I left something out, let me know! :) ----------------------- Why I'm here: I am 5'2" and somehow gained about 20 lbs of weight that snuck up on me... Ok not really, I was being LAZY, I admit it! So far I've lost half of the weight I need to lose, so I'm here to lose my 2nd half! My profile pic is from 8/20/07. I'll update the pic(s) throughout my progress. ---------------------- My (not so current anymore) Workout Schedule: Krav Maga 3 x's a week, Bellydance 2 x's a week, then some cardio-kickboxing if I can fit it in.

I hadn't even considered sushi as a post-workout refueler - such a great idea! I see from the posts that tuna rolls and salmon sashimi are popular choices. Any other suggestions? Thanks for putting this out there - I'm so excited to snack on sushi after my next workout! Be well

1.5 years ago I was 323lbs and miserable...I have lost over 130lbs by eating better, drinking less booze, and exercising...I still have weight to lose but I am a much happier person and I'm glad I found traineo to help me monitor my progress

Drink up in moderation!!!!...if getting healthy and fit means forgetting about the joy of drinking beer (or whatever you like) then the happiness associated with improved health would go away...I think sushi and beer will go on tonights menu

My advice would be to wait. Give your body some protein to digest, drink a ton of water and then wait about an hour or two. This is the best time to give your body the carb boost. And the extra recovery time will keep the beer from hurting your hydration.
But if you don't do a good full workout you should skip the beer. I know I would have a tendency to half ass a workout just to chug one.

You know, if you're super-intent on cutting your weight, skipping the beer wouldn't hurt, but I'd say go for it. I mean, you only live once and your profile indicates that you're not obese - why torture yourself eating sushi without beer if you don't have to? (God, I'm probably a terrible person to get advice from...)
I wish I could afford sushi after my workouts... of course, I don't do as well with the big chunks of fish so I tend to go for other rolls that probably aren't as healthy for you... nothing with tempura, but I'm fairly certain that anything on top of a california roll isn't going to be nearly as good for you as the tuna would be.
