Does anyone have any suggestions for a salad dressing (I'm planning on just using it on romaine lettuce) that is...
- low in calories
- healthy
- easily made at home
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I don't know much about which salad dressings are best, as I rarely bother with dressing.
However, when I do, a trick I use is to keep the dressing on the side and dip my fork in it lightly before each bite. This way I precisely control the amount of dressing I use, and find that I eat far less than I normally would. Instead of using half of the little plastic tub they give you at a resturant, I end up using probobly about a 1/2 teaspoon. Hell, even full-fat ranch doesn't do much damage when you only use a 1/2 teaspoon.

If you want to make one that's pretty good at home, I have a nice dijon vinaigrette that I use:
Combine a spoon of dijon mustard with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Shake well. Done!
The proportion of vinegar to oil will depend on your personal preference.
Though olive oil may not be particularly low in calories, you don't need to use much and at least it's good for you!

I often use pico de gallo salsa as salad dressing. At 5 calories per tablespoon, it's hard to beat. I spend the calories I saved on avocado -- delicious with salsa.

That's the exact same technique my wife taught me! It works really well since you end up with the flavor of the dressing in every bite if you want it and you don't need to worry too much about how many calories or fat grams are in this dressing or that.
It is doubly useful at restaurants and family events.

80 POUNDS GONE!
I've gone from a size 20 to a 6 (and even sometimes a 4!) and I've never looked this good in my life! (22 years of being overweight, dontcha know)
I'm a dedicated South Beach girl with a newfound love for exercise.
I've given up white flour, white sugar, fast food, and who knows what else. But you'll never get my coffee away from me!!

I use Newman's Olive Oil and Vinegar dressing. It's one of the few with no sugar. I also like a Ginger Vinaigrette that I've gotten at natural food stores, but for the life of me I can't remember the brand right now!

I have prioritized my job and grad school before my health and my mind and body took a beating as a result. I am coming upon an age milestone and want to reclaim my health and fitness! Mens sana in corpore sano!
****************************
Now starting a my second goal and last 10 ponds. These are a bear! I have a surfing vacation coming up so I have to vary my workouts for core strength, swimming endurance, and upper body conditioning. I think wearing a bathing suit and not wanting to drown will be serious motivation!
****************************
Part III: I had some diet fatigue over the holidays. That and the flu helped me to add some weight over the season.
Now, I'm getting back into it and commiting "40 days" until Easter to stay focused on my goals. My friends have given up candy and other things for Lent so I'm looking at it as making it easier to stay on track.
************************** For the summer, I've changed my goals. I have been healthy (with times of diet fatigue) but I have been mostly in a maintenance mode.
Now, I have a new commitment to drop some more weight to be squarely within the "normal" BMI category. I am committed and can do it by the end of the year!

Everyone has good ideas. I have a dijon vinaigrette that I also love, and I will try the salsa and avocado!
I have always been a sucker for creamy dressing, but to cut some of the calories I have substituted low-fat mayo or low-fat plain yogurt when recipes call for regular mayo or sour cream. I do a little tweaking with spices/herbs and it has worked well.
A creamy peppercorn recipe I use is: low fat mayo, couple of tablespoons parmesan cheese (as desired), few dashes of Worcester (instead of anchovies--but you can use a few of those too), some garlic paste, salt (as needed), maybe some lemon, and coursely ground peppercorns. If its too thick I have added water and blended to make smooth.
Good luck!

I started out exercising and dieting in order to qualify for a laparoscopic lap band surgery.
After a few months, I found that I actually felt better, and had more energy, so I decided to scrap the surgery.
I started doing so well in fact, that I inspired my husband, aunt and uncle, and cousin to go to the gym.
In 1.5 years, I'm down 120 lbs, and no surgery! If I can do it, anyone can.

My fave is the Newman's Own Light Italian w/Lemon. It's fabulous, and doesn't taste light or diety-y.

Its been a while since I last visited my page here. Since then I have run a few races and set some new PR's including a 2 hour half marathon in February (brr) and a 26 minute 5K in march (still brr). I have been really happy with my performance over the past few months. After setting those PR's I took some down time and now I am taking my time building a good base for heavy summer training. I feel like a marathon might be in the near future. It will definitely be in a warm month. I am really sick of training in the cold weather. Luckily, I just bought a house and a fancy treadmill to put in the basement. This will allow me to train before work and to stay warm!

Kens light olive oil vinaigrette. anything kens is awesome. be careful with light dressings as they can be high in sugar and sodium. A few extra grams fat and cals from good fats like olive oil are much better than loads of sugar and sodium. I try to keep the amount of sugar per serving at 2grams or less and sodium at 290mgs or less. you could also try non-traditional dressings like salsa, mustard or Fage yogurt.
