Must get back down to me fightin' weight, darned stoopid holidays and their tasty treats...
Fer reel: A couple years ago I dropped from 200 to 120, and since I've been "maintaining" ... which has turned into a slight, slow gain. School leaves me with an excuse to not work out, and that has lead to my weight creeping up. After 20 pounds I fought hard to get off the first time I'm saying no more and working my fat bum back down into the 120s where it belongs.
I prefer lifting heavy but I've learned to not hate "cardio" and have even taken up running... sorta.
Of course, my fave pastimes are usually sedentary, my art, gaming, etc... But I can get over that.

Usually ice and some aspirin or ibuprofen (they're anti-inflammatory) will relieve it. It may be that injury, it may be some kind of RSI or arthritis-kind of thing related somewhat to it or not related at all. Rarely is ice a bad thing.
Try even a bit of ice and pills before the workout by about a 1/2 hour (with something little to eat if you're prone to irritation of the tummy with the NSAIDs)... it'll keep it from getting inflamed and being a PITA, and then ice after and take pills if you need them.
If it's just odd and achy, it's prolly not much a doc can/would do. but, if it's more than that, have your doc or an osteo-doc check it out. Better safe than sorry...

It is our habits that will make or break us - and mine were killing me.
It has been a six month commitment, but I no longer drink soda, fast foods are once every other week (if that), I get to bed at a decent hour, don't eat after 8pm and make sure to grab something for breakfast. Just with these changes, I have lost 15 pounds.
And now with the hardest part out of the way, I am ready to get down to business and revamp my diet, eat less calories, start exercising and not have to worry so much about my old habits sabotaging my progress.
My first goal is 145. I will reach it.
145 achieved. looking for 135.

I've torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) three times...and had it fixed three times. In my experience, if your knee joint is moving, (side to side especially) then you may have a torn ligament. Especially, if you have had some of the same symptoms for awhile. Does your knee get pretty swollen and puffy after a work out?
I think that you should avoid what irritates it until you have it checked out and know for sure what is the problem. Otherwise you might create a worse problem. For instance, I tore my ACL...didn't realize it (my life seems like some scary movie, but anyway)...I decided to practice tumbling and I jammed my meniscus (cartilage under knee cap) into my knee and was unable to bend it until the surgery two months later.
So, I am sure you are not as clumsy as me, but I would go have it checked out. Immediate care? Ice for 15 minutes...down some advils.

why is this in the recipes section?
i have a history of terrible knee stuff too. 3 operations, hundreds of knee dislocations.
I recommend lots of slow and controlled leg extensions to build up the inner quadricep - this solves 90% of knee problems ! Its made my condition 'managable' - i still will never be able to be a runner or go skiing (which deeply saddens me, really) - but i can live day - to - day with no problems and life some heavy ass weights.

Started NutriSystem on 3/10/07 to lose weight. Continue to weight train and adding more cardio. Primary goal is to drop the weight. Once the weight is off, then I will intensify the strength training.

KM,
I would recommend that you see a sports doctor to make sure it is not something more sinister. But I offer this information on my own experience:
Sounds like what I have, a small tear in the meniscus layer of the knee.
Linky
I was training for a 9 mile race when I had the partial tear. My symptom is at about mile mark 4 in a run I start to get pain just below the knee cap. Also, if I grab my kneecap and extend my knee, I can pop the joint like a knuckle. My doctor basically said as long as I can run 4 miles before the onset of pain it is not worth undergoing surgery to fix. I am hoping that as I lose weight, I can extend the run distance before the onset of pain.
Some things I have found that help
* Brooks Beast running shoe, cushioned and in large/wide sizes (like me)
* Running on a foot path instead of roadways/sidewalks
* Wind Sprints (fast running seems to be less jarring impact on my knee)

Vernon, thanks for your response.
My doc said that it was inflammation from over use...
I will seek out a sports doc...

I've torn my ACL and meniscus (sp?) too playing soccer. May I suggest heating your knee before your workout for about 5-10 minutes to loosen up the muscles before using them? That's what I had to do during physical therapy, then ice it afterwards to avoid swelling. I'd also suggest getting it checked out so you don't make it worse! The surgery isn't bad if that's what they suggest. Not painful, at least for me it wasn't, just a frustrating first few weeks on cruches. Good luck!

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they haev to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is NOTHING.

Amen on that, like I posted in another thread just now, building up the quads will work wonders for a LOT of knee problems since the quads help keep your knee in socket. That isn't to say "forget about the doctor, just do leg extensions and squats!", you should definitely get checked out if it's within your means, but building up those muscles will still help a ton.

Three weeks to not be healed is a pretty long time, if a doctor is really out of the question you probably should be spending as little time on your feet as possible and try to just let your knee heal. I'm no knee/joint expert, but I'm willing to bet that any pressure you're putting on it at all is keeping it from healing (or worse yet, healing properly). Other than that, stretch and try to ease your way back into a full range of motion without weight/pressure (such as your body weight!)
Edit:
Haha, I just noticed the dates on the original posts, no wonder I didn't really recognize most of the people
