Hi

This is a recipe for making protein bars I always follow and man are they good!

1 & 1/2 cups whey protein powder
1 cup of uncooked oatmeal
1/2 cup Natural peanut butter
5 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup of raisins

*serving sizes can be modified according to taste

Mix all together then stick in the fridge for a couple of hours then cut up into small bars - makes a super high protein, low GI bar plus works out MUCH cheaper than buying branded ones!

Hey

If you're into homemade health bars I've tried a few that I saw on Alton Brown's Good Eats that I can vouch for as being very good. They are from his episode called Power Trip, the recipes are here:

PS Chris do you use the regular 100% rolled oats for the uncooked oatmeal?

Good link John - the protein bar recipes looks a bit more labour intensive but probably tastes just as good :-)

Yeah, just regular 100% rolled oats for the recipe above - muesli is excellent too

Thanks

Hey John, thanks for posting that Food Network link! I made the protein bars from it tonight (with a few changes; splenda instead of sugar, and water instead of apple juice since I don't like it much) and they're really yummy!

I'm going to try yours next, Chris, they sound good too. I just need to find whey protein powder (unless you think soy protein powder would be a good sub?). Didn't have any luck at the local supermarket looking for it so I'm going to have to roam afield to the local Whole Foods.

I don't know if anyone's answered this for you already, but soy protein can be substituted for whey protein; although whey has slightly more "value". You probably won't find either in the local supermarket: try health food shops (i.e. the type of places that sell supplements, vitamins, etc.) or sports/fitness shops.

Good stuff!
Would anyone have the basic nutritional info. on these? I am mainly looking for calories, but the other stuff would be a bonus. I know that serving size can vary, but I am picturing the basic size of commericially produced bars when I think of these.
Thanks,

I'be been lookng for a great protein bar (homeade) recipe and have been turned off by the recipes that call for 1 cup of raw oats. Aren't the rolled oats like Quaker, the high GI oats? This is my understanding.

Any other ingredient that would be lower GI or are the oats OK?

Thanks all.

Last night, I made peanut butter chocolate pudding. All I did was make SF FF instant pudding with skim milk, added 2 TB of Peanut butter and 6 scoops of whey protein. A very low sugar (milk) high protein treat.

Dave O, 6 scoops of protein? Did you use one box of SF/FF Instant Pudding?

Yeah, one box and a little too much milk. Now it's just a cold pudding, but I'm learning. I really want to do the bar thing. Something about buying bars that are mass produced that doesn't sit right with me.

I've had 3 servings and still have about 1/3/ of the pan left. I'll probably squeeze 5-6 servings which would be about 1 scoop/serving which is about right.

Chris, I followed your recipe last week and the bars did not come that good. Very flaky.

However, I made them this week again and WOW! They are best bars I have tasted because they taste so fresh compared to the ones you buy at the stores. Have you figured out the nutriontal facts on the bars?

Well if anyone cares I kind of figured out the nutritional facts on these bars. This is based that the # of bars produced by this recipe is 10 bars and it is based on the following products that I used:
- Honey (forgot the brand name)
- GNC Whey Protein
- Skippy Natural Peanut Butter-Crunchy
- No Raisins
- Regualar Oatmeal

Facts per Bar:
208 Cals/19g Carbs/12g Sugar/8.8g Fat/15.8g Protein. I know about 2 grams of the Carbs comes from Fiber.

I think I am going to mess with the recipe to see if I can get more protein out per bar.

Do you use the really finely ground oat bran or just regular oat bran flakes? I made these last night and it was way too flaky. I had to add 1/2 cup of water to make them form but they dont set.
